Price guarantee not over a dollar!

There is one dollar store for every 18,000 people in the United States, and one for every 26,7000 in Canada.
Dollar Store

It’s surprising the number of items which can be purchased under one dollar. But the question is, how good are they? Will they last? How safe are they? Is it not a waste of money?

Most of the items in Dollar stores are from Southeast Asia, mainly China, Hong Kong, Indonesia … where the labor cost is relatively low and quality factor is not of primary importance. Those manufacturing plants will often use the lowest cost material in order to keep costs as low as possible. A lot of those products are actually aimed at the local population whose income is low. To us one dollar is cheap, but for them it is not. They will probably pay 30% of what we are paying. The Dollar store’s margin may be around 30 to 60%.

We have to be extremely careful when we shop in Dollar stores. There have been cases where products have been recalled (e.g toothpaste) because of safety issues. Dollar stores products are generally of poor quality. The tools are often not very effective. However they have products which are as good as those found in regular stores, sometimes same manufacturer and same brand, but which cost a third of the price. It shows how much more profit other stores are making on similar items. So an item with a higher price does not necessarily mean it is of better quality. It may simply mean that someone is pocketing more money.

It is not wrong to buy at Dollar stores. Check for brand names first and pay attention to the country of origin. The same brand manufactured in another country is not the same anymore. Although we would think the formulation should be the same it is not always the case. A Kit Kat made in Canada would be the same in Loblaws or Dollar stores. Why pay more?

Remember when you shop in Dollar stores you can save quite an amount of money if you choose wisely. The chance that you get a bad product there is however two or three time higher than in a regular stores.
If you want to be safe then do not shop in Dollar stores.
