The next generation of safer laser eyes surgery and painless laser hair removal might be coming soon.
Raydiance has developed a next-generation laser that integrates computing and software control to create a USP laser that generates only 56 microjoules per pulse with pulses 700 femtoseconds long, a world record (a femtosecond is one billionth of one millionth of a second).
The peak power generated by the laser is approximately 80 megawatts. It is the highest pulse energy ever achieved in a fiber laser at the eye-safe wavelength of 1552 nanometers.
This extremely brief and powerful light pulses is capable of precisely vaporizing virtually any material without generating heat.
Continuous wave lasers generate heat when they are used for ablation, making them undesirable for engineering purposes, and dangerous for medical operations. The heat generated transfers to the area surrounding the target, leading to melting, material reflow or tissue charring.
The application sectors include cancer treatment, next-generation surgery, gene therapy, cosmetic applications, high value materials processing, nanotechnology, bioengineering, defense and security.
