Most drivers who have ever gotten lost in a new city or a part of town they rarely drive in know the value of having a GPS at hand.

A GPS allows you to navigate with confidence, even when a road is closed and you must decide on a new route, or you take the wrong exit and need to find your way back onto the highway safely.

We have all read by now the mishap of a computer consultant who drove his rental car onto train tracks while following the instructions his GPS unit gave him.

He escaped injury, but the question arises, Is it safe to have a GPS in your car?

Consider that some countries do not allow the use of a GPS in your car.

The reason is obvious: if the driver is busy reading and/or operating the GPS unit, his or her eyes are not on the road and an accident can easily occur — as our poor consultant found out.

It is in fact quite easy to decide for yourself whether a GPS in your car is more of a hindrance and danger than help.

Ask yourself if you can drive while listening to an audio book.

Some people simply can’t.

I, thankfully, can. Audio books have saved my sanity driving in rush hour traffic to work and back home. I can pop an interesting audio book in and the story is so interesting that I do not care about slow drivers, drivers who cut me off, drivers who do not thank me when I let them in, etc. — and, before I know it, I am at my destination. I have listened to dozens of books this way — books that I simply do not have the time (or energy) to read otherwise.

Likewise, a GPS (the basic unit — forget about the bells and whistles) has helped me get back on track many times when roads were closed or traffic were too heavy or I just missed a turn (or took it on purpose just for the adventure of it).

If you can listen to audiobooks while still driving normally and safely, a GPS will most probably not bother you. If you can’t, a GPS will probably be a danger to you.
