The big news behind the Sigma DP1 is not that Sigma was there first (in fact, the Sony R1 has that distinction, followed by the Leica M8) — but that the technical hurdles for putting in a large image sensor into a compact consumer digital camera is being steadily ironed out. It is just a matter of time before the major players also jump in with their own models.
And then it is a whole new ball game!
When consumer digital cameras start using APS-sized image sensors, expect a quantum jump in image quality (imagine one equipped with optical IS and intelligent ISO). At last, consumers will be able to “just click and the camera will do the rest” — in fantastic colors and detail, with image quality that is as good as what a DSLR gives.
