TomTom makes some of the world’s best-featured navigation devices.
Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Amsterdam, its navigation products are sold in 30 countries, with offices in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.
TomTom is listed at Euronext, Amsterdam Stock Exchange in The Netherlands ( TMOAF.PK ).
TomTom products have won numerous awards, are widely popular in Europe, and has quickly climbed to the #2 spot in North America behind Garmin.
TomTom GPS devices uses maps from TeleAtlas, and though they have road crews that verify local streets, it seems that they put heavier reliance on published maps with the result that TomTom maps and generated routes can sometimes lack accuracy and not be as up-to-date.
However, no maps and generated routes are 100% accurate and up-to-date, no matter the brand of GPS device used.
In 2007, TomTom purchased TeleAtlas and introduced a new MapShare online map correction service that enables TomTom users to post and share corrections online. This MapShare service, executed properly, promises to provide TomTom maps a level of accuracy not available in other devices.
