Could Polaroid revive from its ashes with the launch of its new miniature printer, the PoGo?

Digital cameras killed both Polaroid and film cameras by allowing its users to instantly view the shots taken and to erase them if required.

However it’s one thing to view a 2.5″ screen and another to hold a tangible picture. Polaroid is betting that consumers will prefer to have pictures at the end of the day.

Instead of launching a digital camera with instant pictures Polaroid chose to make the printer accessible to all digital cameras and mobile phones. This way its market share can explode exponentially, if it is popular among consumers.

The hand-held 227 g PoGo uses thermal printing technology instead of ink and produces business card-sized 2 X 3 inches colour photos in 60 seconds. The paper is embedded with billions of yellow, magenta and cyan dye crystals that are activated by heat. It is called Zink, for zero ink.

The printer connects to digital cameras and mobile phones wirelessly by Bluetooth or by the USB port.

Because PoGo is portable it can be carried around easily. It has one button, to turn it on or off, and a USB port to attach a digital camera.

Pogo costs about $150 and each print would cost around 35 cents.
