Despite having more powerful game consoles, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 have been unable to catch up with the Nintendo Wii.
In February 2007, Sony sold 127,000 PlayStation 3 and 176,000 PSP. Microsoft sold 228,000 Xbox 360. Nintendo sold 335,000 Wii and 485,000 DS portable players.
It all goes to show that it’s not “by power or by might, but by innovation” that the videogame industry needs to play the game to win.
Oh, and an affordable price, too. The Nintendo DS sells for $130 and the Wii for $249. Compare that to the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) at $199 and the PS at $599. The Microsoft Xbox 360 retails at $299.
The DS also basks in the “Cool” factor with two screens and a stylus. The feeling of power that a stylus imparts to its user probably accounts for why the DS has been so popular with Tweens.
