In a move that will be controversial, Nikon has “upgraded” its popular Nikon D40 entry-level DSLR from 6.1MP to 10.2MP, all other features remaining more or less the same.

That extra “x” on the nameplate will cost you a premium US $200 if you opt to upgrade from your D40 and replace the body only (assuming you already have the kit lens that you purchased with the D40).

The Nikon D40x is priced US $729.99 body only (compare the Nikon D40 at US $529.99, body only), but for a mere US $70 extra, you will get the kit lens also.

We don’t see too many existing Nikon D40 users replacing their digital SLR with the D40x anytime soon, but if you are in the market for a compact and easy-to-use entry-level digital SLR, the Nikon D40 or D40x (with new kit lens) should be at the top of your list.
