The big news over at Microsoft is, of course, the departure of founder, Chief Architect, and miracle-worker-extraordinaire Bill Gates, effective July 2008.

June 15, 2006, Redmond, Wash: (L-R) Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie, Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie and CEO Steve Ballmer gather prior to a news conference announcing plans for Gates to transition out of a day-to-day role in Microsoft over the next two years while Ozzie and Mundie assume increased roles in the company.

Wait a minute, July 2008 is two (2) long years from now! Sounds a bit like some guys wanted to walk, and were promised the job, 2 years early. Sounds like what’s his face was promised that he will eventually replace Jay Leno 5 years from now???

Anybody find this a totally strange news? The team Ballmer-Mundie-Ozzie will be the triumvirate that will determine the future of Microsoft. I think, without Bill, it’s goodbye to Microsoft.

Thanks, Bill for making computing accessible to the little guys. The future is now what’s running on the Internet — and Google is already out of the gate in this race. With Bill’s vision — and stranglehold on applications — gone, we can now freely move on to the next era of computing.
