In a development that mystifies us more than the San Andreas rumblings, six women from Canada’s Simon Fraser University have invented the hold-your-breath, drum-roll-please… “Ladybag.”

No, not the bag lady — the Ladybag. Developed as part of a course project, which placed students from the university’s interactive arts degree and the information technology degree together, the Ladybag consists of a radio frequency identification reader (RFID) embedded at the bottom of the bag. This RFID is connected to a screen-like panel in the front of the bag, which contains three patterns of light-emitting diodes.
Each pattern is an icon representing an essential item that the owner does not want to leave home without. In the prototype, these items are a set of keys, a wallet, and a cell phone, each getting an RFID sensor attached to it.
The idea is really simple and quite original: when an item is missing in the bag, the corresponding icon lights up as a reminder.
Now, ladies, how about one for the guys? The Guypant, or something like that, eh? The pockets light up to remind the bloke that he forgot something: his car keys or wallet.
Or, how about the Shoppingbag: type in the list of items you want hubby to purchase at the supermarket and they all light up; as he puts each one into the bag, the corresponding icon blinks off. No more forgetting to buy milk!
And, oh, oh, how about the Cellphonenag? Things he’s got to remember to say to you throughout the day, like how he loves you and stuff like that [no RFID required here]?
The potential uses of this invention are endless… I cringe.
