It seems Warner Bros has nailed HD DVD into the coffin by siding with Sony BluRay. Sony is doing everything it can to make sure that the Betamax episode does not recur.

It seems strange that so many have selected to go with BluRay even though it is almost twice as expensive as HD DVD. The difference in quality is not perceptible between those two formats. Consequently it is to the advantage of the consumers to choose HD DVD.

How come that BluRay is getting the upper hand?

For one thing Sony by introducing Bluray in Playstation 3 had thereby created automatically a following of thousands of games players into that format. It would not make sense for them to switch to HD DVD after. They can use the Playstation 3 to play BluRay movies while many people are still waiting on the sideline unable to decide which format to pick. For the thousands of Playstation gamers there is no decision to make. It has already been made for them.

Another negative aspect for HD DVD is that there is only one manufacturer of HD DVD player, Toshiba. LG and Samsung manufacture players with both formats presently. How long they will do this is unknown. For consumers this means limitation in their choices of players and the lack of competition does not help to bring the price down.

Is it really the end for HD DVD?

Even though everything points to the death of HD DVD we think it is possible that it will survive. The recording element can enable it to exist just like there are several formats of CD and DVD. Once there are HD DVD recorders people might shift to it to record home videos or movies if the price of the disc is substantially lower than that of BluRay.

Even though the content producers have a strong influence on the choice of the format it will be eventually the consumers who will make the final decision.
