To save your "emergency" electric items from damage in a Solar Super-storm, such as the Carrington event, they need to be shielded from the energy charged air, similar to how coax wire has a shield. The Shielding would need to be connected to Earth ground to drain the energy to ground for the two or so days that the plasma energy surrounds the Earth. Note that in 1859 some telegraph lines were used without batteries on either end of the lines. The Plasma energy field charged the lines. The telegraph relays did not release, and thus the on-off design would not function. Many coils of the relays simply burned due to the over-voltage condition. This solar storm will most likely last as before, a couple of days. We will probably have a similar time of warning, about 14 hours before the storm reaches Earth. So... you want to be prepared, like the Boyscouts motto. It is true that no one knows exactly how a solar super storm is going to affect us but past occurrences give us an indication how it will affect us now that we are so dependent on electronic circuitry.
