The HDTV will be one of the most expensive item we would buy for our home and consequently we need to be careful how we choose it.

If we could choose freely, we would probably pick the largest screen with the highest definition, assuming money is not an issue.

The reason is because we want to replicate a movie theater feeling in the  home and this is only possible with a large size high definition TV.

Of course we would need to couple it with Surround Sound too, but this is another issue we would deal in another review.

Factors To Consider Before Buying an HDTV

Image Quality

Some HDTV reviewers suggest that we pick the technology first:  LCD, plasma, rear-projection  etc …

It is true that each type has its own advantages and disadvantages but the technology has improved considerably that those differences are getting smaller.

All types are getting thinner and black reproduction has improved even for LCD.

It would be hard to tell whether the TV we are watching is an LCD or plasma if we have not been told about it.

If our eyes can barely detect the differences then it does not matter which technology we choose as long as the image quality is superb.

The important thing is that we are impressed with the image displayed on the screen.

Remember, it’s all about image.

HDTV Size

There was a time when we have a recommended TV size depending on the distance between our seat and the TV.

This is not applicable any more with high definition TV. The image is so sharp that it can be viewed at closer distance without noticing the pixelation.

In fact we recommend getting the largest TV you can afford so that you can feel like you are in a movie theater.

TV is something we are going to watch everyday and consequently it is worth getting the best we can.

A 50″ TV might appear huge when we first watch it but after a few weeks it will have shrunk, we guarantee you.

We would then feel sorry why we did not buy a bigger one.

Should we trade size for quality?

Definitely not! Image quality is top most priority.

HDMI inputs and outputs are now regular features in HDTV. There should preferably be more than one for each, as more and more media devices are coming equipped with HDMI.

What about media cards? Do you use SD cards or some other memory cards? If you take a lot of digital pictures you might want the TV to have an input for digital cards.

That means, you can instantly view your pictures or video clips on high definition TV without any connection cable. They certainly look more impressive on a large 52″ screen than on a PC screen.

Power Consumption

Power usage is now becoming a big issue. Going Green  is the popular buzzword, and rightly so.

TV as they become bigger and more sophisticated consume more and more power.  They can consume quite a lot if left on for hours.

The manufacturers are now trying to minimize power consumption.

LED TV are presently the most energy efficient.
