Believe it or not, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have completed a prototype device that can block digital-camera function in a given area.

Commercial versions of the technology could be used to stymie unwanted use of video or still cameras in places such as movie theaters or to prevent amateur photography of shopping-mall-Santas.

Besides blocking digital camera and movie use in commercial venues, this technology can also be used to prevent espionage photography in government buildings, industrial settings or trade shows.

I don’t know if this is good or bad, just that these PhD students at Georgia Tech seem to have run out of appropriate research topics.

I can just imagine this technology being implemented everywhere, with a famous coffee shop which shall remain nameless being the first to try it.
