On May 1, 2010 the FDA warned consumers and health care professionals not to consume Vita Breath, due to its high lead content.
Vita Breath is a herbal dietary supplement, which purports to help people suffering from Asthma.
It is manufactured by American Herbal Lab and marketed on the Internet for $65 (60 capsules).
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene analyzed a sample of Vita Breath and found that it contains hazardous levels of lead – 1,100 ppm, which is 10,000 times higher than FDA’s maximum recommended level for lead in candy.
In spite of that the supplement has not been recalled.
The FDA apparently doesn’t have the authority to pull dietary supplements from the market.
Under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act the FDA regulates lead in cosmetics, food, and food wrappers, but not supplements.
As a supplement, Vita Breath does not have to adhere to the FDA’s candy guidelines.
Lead poisoning may cause abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and bloody or decreased urination.
It may eventually cause damage to the nervous system and internal organs.
Children are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning.
What are the FDA and health authorities waiting for to take actions?
Lead poisoning occurs regardless whether the metal is ingested through candy or through supplement
