Facebook was once a safe haven where only friends and relatives could communicate and share information with each other without feeling threatened. It was a closed social network.

Myspace was on the other hand an opened network where everyone could view each other’s account and was therefore deemed less secure.

But all this has changed now. Facebook has turned from the green pasture land to the jungle of Amazon, where hidden pitfalls are scattered everywhere.

Facebook in its endeavor’s to monetize itself has opened breaches in its walls so that advertisers and developers could access the accounts of its members.

It’s so subtle that most people do not notice it and naively bring in the Trojan horse without realizing the danger they are setting themselves and others in their groups.

Will you be one of them?
Facebook Security Settings

Although Facebook allows you to tighten the security control and to limit access of your personal profile to others, most people assume it has been taken care of by default.

But this is unfortunately not true. You need to make sure that the settings are correct and they have not changed with time.

Changed?

Yes every time Facebook modifies itself whether it has a new appearance or something else, all the security settings are changed and you have to reset them.

How many users are aware of that? Most do not even know there has been a change.

15 privacy and consumer protection organizations have filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, claiming that Facebook plays with privacy settings on purpose to make users’ personal information available for commercial use.

Facebook should be able to make any changes without affecting the security settings of its users.

Facebook Quiz & Games

Did you notice that to send a virtual flower or to participate in an activity you received a warning that by doing so you are authorizing the application to access your account?

If you refuse, then sorry, you cannot participate.

Once they access your account, they know everything in your profile and who your friends are and their profiles if they have given you access.

They will know your date of birth, your ‘husband or wife, your children, their pictures and whatever you have written, your likes, your dislikes etc.

Advice: Better not take any quiz or play any games in facebook.

Facebook Ads

The facebook ads may contain spywares or malwares. By clicking on them, you are actually downloading a virus, which may reveal what is in your computer or allowing them to gain control of it.

According to Joan Goodchild, senior editor of CSO (Chief Security Officer) Online, Facebook does not do a good job checking their ads to see if they contain viruses or not.

One could not help wondering if they care more about the ads revenues than about the security issues.

Advice: Never click on a Facebook ad no matter how appealing it is.

Domino Effect

If your friend is not so security conscious, he might get hacked and because you are connected together, you will also be hacked and your friends will be hacked too.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest point. No matter how secure you may be, you become vulnerable once the breach is done.

Advice: Get out of Facebook, else pray it does not happen.

Facebook is becoming like New York city, exciting and fun to live in but also dangerous if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Yahoo

Ebay

It’s ironic all 3 words did not exist a generation ago. Yet today they are the most searched, used and popular words on the internet.

Google has become a word of its own. It is replacing the word search. How often do we hear – why don’t you google it?

Although Yahoo’s search engine was older than that of Google, the word Yahoo never attained the prominence of Google and was unable to develop into a verb.

Ebay on the other hand has become synonymous to bargain buying and selling. If you are looking for a bargain, go to ebay. The fact that the word ebay is so popular indicates that people are constantly searching for things to buy or sell.

The internet is like a genie which has come out of the bottle and cannot be put back inside again.

Facebook and twitter are also becoming very popular keywords and could challenge and displace ebay, yahoo and even google, although this appears to be very unlikely.

Buzz is another potential keyword to watch. Google is trying to popularize it and if it succeeds, it might become a new verb.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular keywords

Most websites content are free. There is no need to pay for them. However there is often time a lot of work involved to acquire and to publish those information.

A lot of websites and blogs (including ours) depend on advertisements from Google and Chitika to generate revenues.

Each click on one of those ads might earn a few cents regardless whether the person make any purchase or not.

A <a href="http://chitika.com/research/2009/2-of-internet-users-pay-for-100-of-internet-content/ target="_blank">recent study by Chitika reveals that only about 2% of internet users are clicking on those ads.

Source: Chitika

That means, those 2% users are paying for the other 98% users who never click on an ad.

We ask the question, would the 98% internet users click on an ad if that would give them free access to a content?

Most probably yes, if that does not cost them anything.

Would they be willing to click on an ad as a Thank You gesture?

We are not too sure about that.

Many users log in for a particular goal in mind. Once they achieve that goal, whether it’s an information, game playing, social communication, they would tend to log out, unless something strikes their attention.

If the content of an ad provides what they are interested in, chances are great they would click on it.

Chitika tries to work through that by showing their ads when people use the search engines. Google tries to personalize the ad according to the content.

In spite of that the advertisement response is relatively low.

Some ads are very aggressive and persistent, which eventually turn people off.

The question is, how can we get users to view the ads without antagonizing them?

The answer is through conscientization.

Make users aware that internet ads are necessary for free content and their response to them make it possible to remain free.

Most are not aware of that and consequently do not feel the needs to support it.

Will the advertisers be happy about that? Will their sales increase too?

The answer is yes. The success rate might be lower but the sale volume might be more.

If a user realizes he has to click on an ad he would still make a choice which one to click. He would choose the one which interests him the most. That denotes a certain interest, which might lead him to make the purchase.

There is no doubt that the internet will become a more powerful media and contribute significantly to the world economy.
