bluetooth-3.0

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has launched the Bluetooth 3.0 , which increases the transfer rate from 3 Mbps to a rate of 24 Mbps.

This will enable the high-speed transmission of large amounts of data such as photos, music and video between devices.

The Bluetooth 3.0 uses the 802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) to obtain the increased throughput of data transfers.

The new standard includes enhanced power control features built-in to allow for increased power savings.

The increase in speed will see a range of new applications, including the wireless bulk synchronization of music and video libraries between a PC or TV and music or video player.

Major chip manufacturers such as Broadcom and Atheros have already finalized and released chips based on the specification.

Products featuring Bluetooth 3.0 may be available by the end of the year.

According to Bluetooth SIG chief Mike Foley, any phone or computer that has Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a 802.11 G card may be able to be updated to Bluetooth 3.0 via driver, firmware or software update.

Millions of existing cell phones and computers can consequently take advantage of the new features.
